Ribs and breathing Flashcards
Rib handles
rib 1-5 = pump
rib 6-10 = bucket
rib 11-12 = caliper
muscles for breathing
Inspiration =
diaphragm and scalenes
Accessory: SCM and Trapezius
Expiration =
In and Ex obliques
rectus and transverse abdominals
Accessory: Lat dori and QL
Both = In and Ex intercostals
thoracic spine
mechanics
Most mechanically stable part of spine
To allow a secure attachments for ribs to articulate from during breathing
thorat and rib cage are a closed sealed system
this allows it to accommodate to changes in volume and to act as a bellows
provides a stable ancho for movement of upper extremity
limiting factors of breathing
5 points
age
scoliosis
kyphosis
RA
obesity
limiting factors of breathing
5 points explained
Age - increased muscle stiffness.
and changes in breathing patterns.
child - abdominal. Adult chest. Elderly ab.
Scoliosis - leads to excessive SB and R. affecting rib excursion and thoracic restriction
kyphosis - reduced rib excursion and thoracic expansion
RA - increased stiffness and inflammation of cartilage of sternocostal joints = reduced rib excursion
Obesity - lying on back will put more pressure on diaphragm
