RIBS Flashcards
What is a chapmans reflex and how is it believed to be formed?
Small pea like gangliform contraction that is thought to be congested with fascia due to lymph stasis, secondary to visceral dysfunction.
Which ribs are attached to the following muscles?
Scalenes, pec minor, serratus anterior, Quad lumborum, lats
Scalenes- Ribs 1 and 2 pec minor- 3-5 serratus anterior- 1-9 Quad lumborum- 12 Lats-9-12
Describe the atypical ribs and what makes them unique
1 – unifacet on T1; no rib angle just tubercule (flat, short, strong and curved) George Castanzas penis.
2-tuberosity attaches to proximal portion of serratus a.
10 – unifacet T10
11 & 12 – no tubercles, tapered anterior end, no sternal or costal attachment
Anterior landmarks: describe the location of rib one in relation to the clavicle, what vertebral segment is at the level of the angle of louis, xiphosternal joint level?
Rib 1 is inferior to the clavical
Angle of louis T4
Xiphosternal joint T9
Chapmans points (anterior). An anterior rib 1 tenderpoint is usually associated with what type of dysfunction?
exhalation dysfunction
Where are the tenderpoints for ribs 1-10
Rib 1 sternal clavicular border
Rib 2 both the MCL and Axillary line of rib 2
Ribs 3-10 are MCL all the way down
Where are the posterior tenderpoints for ribs 1-10 and what dysfunction is typically associated with a rib1 tenderpoint.
Medial border of the scapula all the way down the back.
RIb 1 posterior tenderpoint associated with inhalation dysfunction (elevated rib 1)
The false ribs attach to the sternum via what?
Single cartilaginous mass Ribs 8-10
Compare the joints of ribs 1-7
Rib 1 synchondrosis joint
Ribs 2-7 synovial joints
The articulations of the posterior costovertebral vs costotransverse ribs would best be described as?
Costovertebral= sliding motion Costotransverse= rotational motion
Which ribs primarily move with pump handle, bucket handle, and caliper motion? What direction of motion do these terms indicate?
Pump handle 1-5 superioanterior motion
Bucket handle 6-10 superiolateral motion
Calipers 11-12 out and elevated then in and depressed
4-6 is combined motion
Name the primary inhalation, exhalation and accessory muscles of the ribcage
inhalation-diaphram
exhalation- quadratus lumborum and lats
Accessory- serratus a, pec minor, scalenes, quadratus lumborum
What’s the functional significance of the diaphram?
Its responsible for the pressure gradient between the abdominal and thoracic cavities which is important for both respiration and circulation as well as lymphatic flow.
3 parts-costal, lumbar, and sternal parts
What is convergence?
Skin and visceral afferent signals converge in the spinal cord leading to referred pain that can excite both somatic and visceral efferents
