Ribs Flashcards
1
Q
True Ribs
A
- Ribs 1-7
- Attach directly to the sternum
2
Q
Flase ribs
A
- Ribs 8-10
- Cartilages are joined to that of the rib immediately superior to them
- Indirect connections/attachment to the sternum
3
Q
Floating ribs
A
- Ribs 11 and 1
- Cartilages do not connect/attach to sternum
End in the posterior abdominal musculature
4
Q
- Typical Ribs (3-9)
- Typical true (3-7)
- Typical false (8-9)
Example question: Which of the following is typical and true? Or atypical and true/false? Understand that true, false, floating ribs, is based upon the costal cartilage.
It’s typical and atypical based upon the characteristics of the rib.
A
Head of typical rib:
- Wedge shaped head
- Two facets separated by the crest of the head
- One for articulation with the numerically corresponding vertebra at the level
- One for articulation with vertebra superior to it
Neck:
- Connects the head with the body at the level of the tubercle
Tubercle:
- Smooth, articular part for corresponding transverse process of the vertebra
- Rough, nonarticular part for attachment of the costotransverse ligament
Shaft
- Thin, flat, and curved
- Greatest curvature at the costal angle
- Costal groove- internal surface that protects the intercostal nerve and vessels
