Ribs Flashcards
Types of ribs
True ribs\vertebrochondral
False ribs/vertebrosternal
Floating ribs/ vertebral free ribs
Where do the rudimentary cartilages of floating ribs end
They end in the posterior abdominal musculature
What are the components of a typical rib
They are the 3rd to 9th rib
They contain
Head
Neck
Tubercle
Body
Describe the head of the rib
It contains 2 facets
Separated by the crest
One facet provides attachment to the corresponding vertebrae
The second facets provide attachment to the superior vertebra
Describe the tubercle of the ribs
Found at the junction of the neck and body
* has a smooth articular part which articulates with the corresponding transverse process of the vertebra
And a rough non articular part that provides attachment for the Costo transverse ligament
Describe the body of the ribs
It is thin, flat and curved
Costal angle
Point where the ribs turn anterolaterally
Also marks the lateral limit of attachment of the intermediate layer of intrinsic muscles of the ribs
Costal groove
Paralleling the inferior border of the ribs
Provides attachment for the intercostal nerves and vessels
What are atypical ribs
The 1st , 2nd, 10th-12th ribs are atypical
Describe the first ribs
It is the broadest, shortest, most widely curved
Has one facet on its head for attachment to t1 vertebra
Has two transversely directed groove crossing its superior surface for the subclavian vessels
What separates the transverse grooves in the first ribs
The transverse grooves are separated by the scalene tubercle and ridge
To which the anterior scalene muscle is attached
Describe the 2nd rib
It is thinner, longer , less slightly curved
What is the main atypical feature of second rib
It has a rough area on its upper surface , the tuberosity for serratus anterior, part of the muscle originates here
Describe the 10th to 12th rib
They have only one facet on their head and articulate with a single vertebra
Atypical features of 11th and 12th ribs
They are short
They have no neck or tubercle
