Rib DSA Flashcards
What does the Rib head articulate with?
Superior costal facet of its own vertebra
inferior costal facet of the vertebra above
What does the tubercle on the rib articulate with?
the transverse process of the corresponding vertebra.
Which ribs only articulate with their own vertebrae (NOT the one above as well)
1, 10, 11, 12
What ribs do not have tubercles and therefore do not articulate with transverse processes?
11, 12
Which are the atypical ribs?
which are the typical ribs?
sometimes which rib fits in both categories?
1,2, 11, 12
3-9
10
which are the true ribs?
false ribs? floating?
why are they called this?
1-7 because cartilage attaches to the sternum
8-10 –> cartilage attaches to the costal cartilage of the rib above
11-12, no anterior attachment
Which muscles elevate the 1st rib?
Anterior Scalene and Middle Scalene
Which muscle elevates the 2nd rib?
Posterior Scalene
Which muscle elevates the 3-5 ribs?
Pectoralis Minor
Which muscle attaches to ribs 6-8?
Serratus Anterior
What ribs attach to 9-10?
Latissimus dorsi
Which muscle is only attached to the inferior aspect of rib 12 and is used to fix the 12th rib in inhalation?
attaches to 11 and 12
Quadratus lumborum
Mnemonic for the anterior scalene muscles?
I get up at 1 AM 2 P
1 Anterior and Middle
2 Posterior
What does the External Intercostals do?
What do the internal intercostals do?
innermost?
elevate ribs during forced inspiration
depression of ribs
depression of ribs
what way does the diaphragm move during inspiration?
inferiorly
along the costal groove, what’s running most superior? then what? then what?
VAN
Vein, Artery, Nerve
What ribs require the bucket handle motion? what diameter is changing?
what ribs require pump handle motion? what diameter is changing?
caliper motion?
1-2, 8-10 transverse
3-7, A/P
11 + 12
how do the 11th and 12 ribs move during inhalation?
exhalation
down and posterior
up and anterior
if someone had a torsional movement of the ribs, what would you expect for the left and right rib?
Assume T5 is rotated to the left
what is causing this?
the left 6th rib will externally turn at the posterior aspect, the anterior extremity is more flat with its inferior border
the right rib will internally turn at the posterior aspect, the anterior extremity having its superior margin accentuated.
articulation at the inferior costal facet… SO ROTATION OF THE THORACIC SPINE
What is non-physiologic movement of the ribs?
due to trauma or repetitive micro trauma
The ribs become sublimed anteriorly or posteriorly.
so it creates abnormal hyper mobile ribs with the rib being carried more either anteriorly or posteriorly along the axis of motion between the costovertebral or the costotransverse articulations
so one or more ribs lose its usual easy movement and becomes restricted.
Explain an inhalation dysfunction?
exhalation dysfunction?
motion towards inhalation is free but it won’t go down back into the exhalation position
it’s free in exhalation but going towards inhalation is not happening.
when someone has osteoporosis or osteoarthritis, what happens to their ribs?
anteriorly depressed (exhalation SD)
