rhythms definitions Flashcards
biological rhythms
activities occurring at regular time periods
circadian rhythm
describes a pattern of behaviour which runs a length of 24 hours
- linked to day and night - triggered by light availability
diurnal
active during day and inactive during night
nocturnal
active during night inactive during day
crepuscular
active during sunlight and sunset
circannual rhythm
seasons - length of days = 365 which is the time taken for earth to orbit
- used for hibernation and migration
- day length changes with seasons so circannual activities are triggered by day length - summer, autumn, winter, spring
circatidal rhythm
tidal waves - in and out - organisms in high tidal zone have high activity in tide in and low in tide out
circalunar rhythm
full moon, no moon, crescent - caused by moon and earth orbit = 29.5 days
