Q

Rhythm

A

Relates to the variations of speed in which a poem is to be read. This speed is influenced by:
End-stopped lines: lines where a sentence comes to a close at the end of the line, thus causing a pause. Can prompt the reader to dwell on individual words.
Enjambment: where the sentence carries over into the next line. Enjambment diminishes pauses and thus speeds up rhythm.
Caesura: where punctuation is used to create pause within a line. Draws emphasis to certain words.
Vowel length: supports a faster rhythm.
Consonant clusters: supports a faster rhythm.
