Broad ovate leaves , tall spires of pendant shaped flowers , attracts bees, rosy purple spotted within 6cm flowers, flowers into summer suited to part shade woodland garden moist well drained soil flowers 2nd year .
Digitalis Purpurea (common foxglove)
short lived biennial with narrow dark green foliage and four petalled sweetly scented bright orange yellow flowers produced in short spikes in spring. ideal for coastal , cottage , informal gardens..full sun well drained soil.
Erysimum Cheiri (common wallflowers)
can be sown in summer for flowers the following spring suited to dappled or part shade delicate overhanging flowers on tall thin stems they will set seed. shades of purple with pale yellow centres.
Aquilegias
often seeds sown in spring to plant out in autumn and then flowers the following year. serrate edged 5 petaled flower with a palette of pink starting dark in centre and then fading to a paler pink on edge of petals. grey green stems with pinnate leaves.
Dianthus barbatus ( sweet william)
sown as a cottage garden favourite 2m height large green leaves and in summer long flower spikes bearing large apricot-pink flowers with contrasting deep pink centres.
