RHS Flashcards
What are the seven PERCEPTUAL impairments apparent in RHS pts?
1) denial of illness
2) neglect
3) constructional impairment
4) topographic impairment
5) geographic disorientation
6) visuoperceptual impairments
7) facial recognition deficits
Denial of illness is common with what kind of damage?
RHS- parietal lobe damage.
Which kind of neglect is most common with RHS pts?
Left hemi-spatial neglect.
What is left hemi-spatial neglect?
When pts do not perceive stimuli on the left side of the body and do not notice visual or auditory stimuli on the left side space.
What are common symptoms of hemispatial neglect? (pg397)
1) failure to respond to people, noises, or objects on the left of body’s midline.
2) self-attending and caring only for the right side of the body.
3) not moving left limbs.
4) bumping into walls, etc on the left.
5) reading on write side of printed materials.
6) writing only on the right, upper part of the pg.
7) not aware of physical or cognitive impairments.
8) disinterest/lack of participation in rehab.
What is motor neglect?
failing to use limbs even when there is no impairment. Pt may deny that the limb works or belongs to them.
T/F Neglect may occur with either hemisphere damage.
True. but it is more severe and persistent with RH damage.
T/F 2/3 of pts with RH damage have neglect, whereas only 1/3 of pts with LH damage have neglect.
True.
T/F Patients with RH damage may lean to the left.
False- lean to the right.
What is constructional impairment?
When pts have difficulty copying, drawing, constructing, or reproducing 2 or 3 dimensional figures. More common with RH than LH damage.
How are mistakes in constructional impairment different in RH damage vs LH damage?
RH= act impulsively and quickly and try to correct errors by adding extra lines. LH= more hesitant, work slower, with false starts. mistakes are due to distortions in angles and lines.
What are some common/stereotypes BEHAVIORAL and COGNITIVE symptoms of RH brain injury?
Pg. 393
1) insensitive to others, preoccupied with self.
2) socially inappropriate.
3) Unaware of limitations.
4) verbal; ramble on and on.
5) difficulty grasping abstract concepts
6) Unable to grasp overall meaning aka gist of things.
What is topographic impairment?
Is it common in RHS?
Problems with Extrapersonal space.
Can’t give or follow directions or familiar routes. Can’t read maps.
Difficulty with visual cues or known landmarks.
important= may talk themselves through to follow directions as needed.
Yes, it is common.
What is geographic disorientation?
They can recognize surroundings but cannot pinpoint (location) where they are. May think they are in a different country or city.
* Less common in RHS than topographic impairment.
What is visuoperceptual impairment?
Will only recognize stimuli if it is clear and unambiguous. Not if they are incomplete or distorted.
