Q

What is left hemi-spatial neglect?

A

When pts do not perceive stimuli on the left side of the body and do not notice visual or auditory stimuli on the left side space.

Q

What are common symptoms of hemispatial neglect? (pg397)

A

1) failure to respond to people, noises, or objects on the left of body’s midline.
2) self-attending and caring only for the right side of the body.
3) not moving left limbs.
4) bumping into walls, etc on the left.
5) reading on write side of printed materials.
6) writing only on the right, upper part of the pg.
7) not aware of physical or cognitive impairments.
8) disinterest/lack of participation in rehab.

Q

What is motor neglect?

A

failing to use limbs even when there is no impairment. Pt may deny that the limb works or belongs to them.

Q

What is constructional impairment?

A

When pts have difficulty copying, drawing, constructing, or reproducing 2 or 3 dimensional figures. More common with RH than LH damage.

11
Q

How are mistakes in constructional impairment different in RH damage vs LH damage?

A
RH= act impulsively and quickly and try to correct errors by adding extra lines.
LH= more hesitant, work slower, with false starts. mistakes are due to distortions in angles and lines.

Q

What are some common/stereotypes BEHAVIORAL and COGNITIVE symptoms of RH brain injury?

A

Pg. 393

1) insensitive to others, preoccupied with self.
2) socially inappropriate.
3) Unaware of limitations.
4) verbal; ramble on and on.
5) difficulty grasping abstract concepts

Q

What is topographic impairment?

Is it common in RHS?

A

Problems with Extrapersonal space.
Can’t give or follow directions or familiar routes. Can’t read maps.
Difficulty with visual cues or known landmarks.
important= may talk themselves through to follow directions as needed.

Yes, it is common.

Q

What is geographic disorientation?

A

They can recognize surroundings but cannot pinpoint (location) where they are. May think they are in a different country or city.
* Less common in RHS than topographic impairment.

Q

What is visuoperceptual impairment?

A

Will only recognize stimuli if it is clear and unambiguous. Not if they are incomplete or distorted.

16
Q

What is it called when a pt has facial recognition deficits?

A

PROSOPAGNOSIA.

Pt can’t recognize familiar faces, may also have problems discriminating gender &/or age.

17
Q

Why do pts with RHS have difficulty picking up on facial expressions or prosodic cues of emotions?

A

b/c the RH typically aids in understanding the expression of emotions in others.

18
Q

What is a pt with RHS’s attention like?

A

problems maintaining and shifting attention and focusing.

19
Q

What are the four COMMUNICATIVE impairments associated with RH damage?

A

1) diminished prosody
2) anomalous (absurd) content & organization of speech
3) impaired comprehension of narratives & convos
4) pragmatic impairments

20
Q

What are some examples of pragmatic impairments in communication for pts with RHS?

A

Problems with turn-taking, topic maintenance, eye contact. Begin and end convos abruptly. Don’t pick up on cues from listener.
They talk too much.

21
Q

What are the six tests for assessing adults with RHS?

A

1) standardized tests
2) non-standardized
3) tests of pragmatic abilities
4) tests of visual & spatial perception, attention, & organization.
5) tests of component attention processes.
6) tests of visual organization

22
Q

What are the standardized tests used for RHS?

A

1) MIRBI
3) RHLB
3) RICE
