Formed over last 7000 years since sea level rise at end of last Ice age
- in 18th century flood moved course of 1 of channels of Rhone to present day position
- lobate shaped delta dominated by waves
- enclosed shape of MS means short fetch distances
- low wind speeds -> low energy + low height waves
- high deposition rate due to flocculation of clay particles
- MS very saline
- small tidal range
