What is osteoarthritis?

A

Wear and tear in the synovial joints, which can be a result of genetic factors, overuse and injury. Imbalance of cartilage being worn down and chondrocytes repairing it leading to structural issues in joint.

What four key changes would you see on an X-RAY for osteoarthritis?

A

L - Loss of joint space
O - Osteophytes
S - Subchondral sclerosis (increased density of the bone along the joint line)
S - Subchondral cysts (fluid filled holes in the bone)

Typical presentation of osteoarthritis?

A

Joint pain and stiffness. Worsened by activity and can lead to deformity.
Instability and reduced function in the joint.
