What is used as rheumatic fever secondary prophylaxis and for how long?
A
What: Benzathine Benpen 1.2M Units/Monthly, If allergic erythromycin 250mg BD
How long?
ARF but no heart stuff –> 5 years
ARF + mild heart disease –> 5-10yrs or until 21yo
ARF + mod heart disease –> 5-10 yrs or until 35yo
ARF + severe heart disease –> 5-10 years or until 40yo

major criteria for rheumatic fever
A
joints, heart - pericarditis/ aschoff bodies/valvular disease, nodules, erythema margintum (serpinginous skin rash), syndeham chorea (chorea of the face, tongue, upper limb)

A
arthralgia, fever, elevated ESR or CRP
prolonged PR interval on the ECG, valvular dysfunction
