The use of a word to modify or govern two or more words, usually in such a manner that it applies to each in a different sense
Zeugma
Repetition of a phrase; word, or Clause at the beginning of two or more phrases, of clauses, in a row. This is a deliberate form of repetition and helps make the writers point more coherent.
Anaphora
Sentences which uses “and” or another conjunction (with no commas) to separate the items in a series, stressing equally each member of a series
Polysyndeton
Commas used (with no conjunction) to separate a series of words. The parts are emphasized equally when the conjunction is omitted
Asyndeton
The presentation of contrasting images. The ideas are balanced by word, phrase, clause or paragraph
antithesis
Usually in poetry, sometimes in prose, the device of calling out to an imaginary, dead, or absent person, or to a place, thing or personified abstraction
Apostrophe
the special language of a profession or group
Jargon
comparison of two similar but different things, usually to clarify an action or a relationship, such as comparing the work of a heart of that of a pump
Analogy
short, simple narrative of an incident; often used for humorous effect or to make a point
Anecdote
a word or phrase (including slang) used in everyday conversation and informal writing that is often inappropriate in formal writing
Colloquialism
implied or suggested meaning of a word because of its association in the readers mind
Connotation
Literal meaning of the word as defined
Denotation
Word choice as element of style, it creates tone, style, and attitude as well as meaning
Diction
Anything that causes laughter or amusement
Humor
words or phrases that use a collection of concrete images to appeal to one or more of the five sense in order to create a mental picture
