Allegory
story with a simplified hidden meaning
Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words
Allusion
expression to call something to mind without mentioning it
Analogy
a comparison of two different things that are similar in some way
Anecdote
a short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person
Aphorism
a concise statement of a truth or principle
Colloquial Language
A phrase that is common; everyday, unconstrained conversation, rather than in formal speech or academic writing
Connotation
an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning
Diction
the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing
Euphemism
a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing
Genre
a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter
Imagery
visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work
Inference
a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Invective
insulting, abusive, or highly critical language
Irony
the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect
