Used to persuade the reader that the writer’s view/opinion is correct
persuasive writing
Can appeal to three things
emotion, logic, and credibility
techniques that authors and speakers use to persuade readers and listeners.
rhetorical strategies
appeals logic&reasoning: relies on use of common sense, facts, stats, data points etc.
Logos
appeal to emotion: tries to get the audience to feel strong emotions in order to persuade
pathos
appeal to authority or credibility: tries to persuade the audience using a sense of right or wrong and/or utilizing credible experts who can be believed
ethos
the use of the same grammatical structure in a sentence or sentences. It connects author’s ideas, and emphasizes them.
parallel structure
poor reasoning/ over-reliance on emotions are
logical fallacies
suggests that a relatively small first step would lead to a chain of related events resulting in some significant effect. The idea that such a chain of events will definitely happen me simply be untrue.
slippery slope
a conclusion that overstates the facts, statement that uses words like always, never, everything,only, or all
Overgeneralization
Is basing conclusions on opinion rather than fact/info.
