ANALOGY
A comparison that shows how two things are like each other.
ANECDOTE
A story of a particular event, often something that happened to you or to someone you know.
CONNOTATIONS
Ideas or feelings associated with words.
DENOTATIONS
The dictionary definition of words.
ENUMERATION
Listing out the elements of something.
JUXTAPOSITION
Mentioning two different things to contrast them or show how they are different.
METAPHORS
Literary devices that use one thing to describe another, such as ‘“The moon is a glowing pearl.”
PARALELLISM
Using similar grammar or structure in a series of phrases or sentences.
PERSUASIVE
The type of writing that tries to get the reader to believe an idea or opinion.
QUALIFYING
Adding language that restricts the meaning or application of the idea, using words like “sometimes,” “only if,” “maybe,” or “when.”
REPETITION
Repeating a word or phrase to add emphasis.
RHETORICAL
In a way meant to persuade and impress.
RHYTHM
A repetition of beats or emphasized and de-emphasized syllables.
SIMILE
Saying one thing is like another, usually using the word “like” or “as,” such as “The new submarine was as agile as a fish.”
