Alliteration
The repetition of successive words of the same initial consonant sound or any vowel in alliteration
Effect: Adds rhythm and flow
Allusion
Reference to a generally familiar person place or thing
Effect: Enhance meaning and detail by using popular examples
Assonance
The repetition of internal vowel sounds in closely following words
Effect: Create a sense of rhythm
Antithesis
A balancing of two opposite or contrasting words, phrases, clauses, paragraphs, or even larger units of writing
Effect: Emphasis and provide clarity
Balanced sentence
It contains two distinct halves or parts, each of about the same length and importance
Effect: Gives writing empathizes, clarity, and balance

Slang(low-key, lit, slay)
Effect: Entertaining, informal
Complex sentence
A sentence containing one independent(can stand alone) and at least one dependent clause(has to follow something)
Effect: Add depth and detail
Connotation
An idea or feeling that a word invokes
Effect: Changes the way a reader perceives a piece
Consonance
Kind of rhyme in which the same consonant follows different vowel sounds
Effect: Draws attention and makes words more appealing
Cumulative sentence
Starts with a general statement and then expands in a series of particulars
Effect: Elaborate and describe something, Provides depth and detail, Give an image

Picture made with words
Effect: Paint image of text to help reader visualize it
Interrupted movement
Interruption to the main clause with a break in ideas
Effect: Informally addressing audience
Irony
When the writer uses words to mean something different from what they seem to say on the surface
Effect: Simulate strong emotions
Metaphor
An implied comparison between two unlike things
Effect: Can help people understand better
Parallelism
Noun, verb, abjective repeated
Effects: Auditory flow, Balancing and weighing multiple ideas in succession
