Allusion
Expression designed to call something to mind without explicitly mentioning/referencing it.
Analogy
Comparison between two things with the relationship helping explain another relationship.
Diction/Tone
The author’s choice of words and the attitude about the subject.
Imagery
Use of description to evoke the 5 senses.
Irony
- The audience knows something the characters don’t
- Someone responding in a way opposite of what’s expected.
- Something happening in a way opposite of what’s expected.
Juxtaposition*
Two ideas placed closely together to produce contrast or unique effect.
Mataphor
Directly comparing something to something else to give the first thing the qualities of the second one.
Parallelism
When a word, phrase, or idea is repeated in order to suggest a deeper meaning.
Repetition*
When words, phrases, or ideas are repeated to create momentum or emphasize its importance.
Syntax*
The organization or arrangement of words and phrases to help create greater meaning. (short sentences stand out.)
Logos
Usage of logic and concrete evidence. (facts, statistics)
Ethos
When writers use their positions, areas of expertise, authority, or reputations to try to persuade you, they are referring to their own character and credibility.
Pathos
When writers try to persuade readers by designing their arguments to elicit emotional responses from the readers.
