Metaphor
Speaking of one thing as though it actually were another. (is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been)
Simile
Compares something to another thing by pointing out how they’re alike. (like, as )
Anaphora
Repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of successive sentences.
Exemplum
Used to cite specific authorities or quote specific sources. Examples in the form of stories.
Allusion
Reference to a fairly well-known event, place, or person.
Understatement
Describing something as less than what it actually is.
Hyperbole
Exaggerating some part of a statement to give emphasis.
Rhetorical Question
Asking a question in which the answer is merely implied. To highlight what the readers do know.
Litotes
Using a word opposite to the condition.
Ex. It wasn’t a bad day.
Antithesis
Contrasting any of the different parts of a statement to contrast ideas.
Ex. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
Analogy
Compares two things for a specific purpose.
Ex. Life is like a mountain.
