Anecdote
When an author using a brief or casual reference to a famous person, group, historical event, place, or work of hand.
Allusion
A figurative device that draws a parallel between two unlike things that have several common qualities of points of resemblance.
Analogy
The word choice or style of speaking that a writer or speaker uses.
Diction
Statements that use exaggerated language to emphasize a point. “He cried a river”
Hyperbole
Uses vivid description that appeals to a reader’s senses to create an image or idea in their head.
Imagery
When a writer or speaker places two things side by side to highlights their differences. ex: wealthy vs poor
Juxtaposition
A polite phrase or word used in place of one that may be too direct or harsh
Euphemism
Comparison between two unlike things
Metaphor
How the text is being presented to readers.
Perspective
Balance within one or more sentences of similar phrases or clauses that have the same grammatical structure.
Parallelism
When an author asks a question that’s not to be answered.
Rhetorical Question
When an author repeats words or phrases to add emphasis.
Repetition
Words that helps with the flow of a text
Tone
Words that help with the flow of a text.
Transitions
