Anecdote
A very short story related to the topic of the text
Allusion
When a author uses a brief or casual reference to a famous person, group, or place.
Analogy
A figurative device that draws a parallel btw. 2 unlike things that have several common qualities of resemblance.
Diction
The word choices or style of speaking that a writer or speaker uses.
Hyperbole
Refers to a statement that use exaggeration language to emphasize a point.
Ex) He cried a river.
Imagery
uses vivid description that appeals to a reader is senses to create an image or idea in their head.
Juxtaposition
When a writer or speaker places 2 things side by side to highlight their differences.
Ex) Wealthy vs. Poor
Euphemism
A polite phrase or word used in place of one that may be too direct or harsh.
Metaphor
A comparison btw. 2 unlike things.
Ex) “It is the East & Juliet is the Sun”
Perspective
How the txt is being presented to readers. Whose pov. is the txt being told from.
Parallelism
A balance within one or more sentences of similar phrases.
Ex) “Give me liberty or give me death”
Rhetorical Question
When the author asks a question that’s not meant to be answered but to prove a point.
Ex) “What’s not to like”
Repetition
When the author repeats words or phrases to add emphasis on a specific not.
Tone
How the author feels about the topic.
Transitions
Words that help with the flow of a txt.
Ex) In addition or Indeed
