Rhetoric
Thoughtful, reflective speaking or writing that leads to effective communication
Rhetorical situation
Shows the interaction among the subject of speaking or writing, the speaker or writer, the audience, the context, and the authors purpose
Rhetorical devices/strategies
Specific writing techniques an author uses to create a certain effect on the audience
Diction
The choice of words used in speaking or writing
Connotation
The thoughts and feelings associated with a word; connotation will be more negative or more positive than a basic word; connotation also shows degree of intensity
Loaded language
Language rich in connotation and vivid images that has been to elicit an emotional response
Elevated language
Formal words and phrases that create a serious tone
Imagery
Sensory language; concrete, rather than abstract, description that creates mental images
Figurative language
Words and phrases that are not meant literally but are intended to relate information in a creative, memorable way
Analogy
An extended comparison between two things in order to clarify the less familiar of the two subjects
Syntax
The physical arrangement and structure of the words; since in structure and paragraph organization
Repetition
Repeating words, phrases, or ideas to convey a type of relationship or sense of importance
Parallelism
Synthetical structure within a sentence that is repeated for a specific effect, usually emphasis; words, phrases, or clauses maybe parallel
Anaphora
The repetition of beginning words and sentences and close proximity to create emphasis
Juxtaposition
Placing dissimilar ideas and close proximity to create a strong contrast
