Allusion
direct or indirect reference to something that is presumably commonly known, such as an event, book, myth, place, or work of art
Anaphora
a sub-type of parallelism, where the exact repetition of words or phrases is at the BEGINNING of successive lines or sentences
Chiasmus
two phrases in which the syntax is the same but placement of words is reversed AB=BA
Delayed/Periodic Sentence
a sentence that delays introducing the subject and verb (or independant clause) until the end, not grammatically correct until the end
Epistrophe
the repetition of a word or group of words at the END of successive phrases, clauses, verses, or a sentence
Litote
a form of understatement that involves making an affirmative point by denying its opposite - “not a bad idea”
Loose/Non-Periodic Sentence
a type of sentence in which the main idea (independant clause) comes first, followed by dependant grammatical units such as clauses and phrases - normal, more natural
Polysyndeton
the device of repeating conjunctions in close succession (lots of “ands”)
Synecdoche
a figure of speech in which part of an entity is used to refer to the whole - “all hands on deck”
Synesthesia
when one kind of sensory stimulus evokes the subjective experience of another - “taste the pain”
