connotation
emotional definition of a word, the emotion people feel when they hear it
context
circumstances, atmosphere, attitudes, and events surrounding a text
ethos
“character”. speakers appeal to ethos to show readers/listeners to show they are credible and trustworthy to speak on the topic
logos
reason. speaker gives clear, rational ideas and uses specific details, examples, facts, statistics, expert testimony, and possibly pictures to back them up
occasion
time amd place of piece
pathos
speaker appeals to pathos to emotionally motivate their audience. also plays on audiences valules, desires, hopes, or fears or prejudices
persona
face or character that the speaker shows to audience
polemic
aggressive arguement that tries to establish the superiority of one opinion over all others
refutation
denial of the validity of an opposing viewpoint
rhetorical appeals
