Rheology Flashcards
What is flow?
The tendency of a material to deform following the application of force
What is a Newtonian fluid?
When shear stress increases in a linear fashion upon increasing shear rate
What is a property of dilatant flow?
The faster you stir, the harder it gets to mix
What is a dilatant fluid?
A high concentration of undissolved particles suspended in a liquid
What is pseudoplastic flow?
When viscosity decreases with shaking or stirring
What are Bingham plastics?
A material that acts as a rigid body at normal stress but as a viscous fluid under high stress
What is thixotropy?
When a pseudoplastic material regains its structural integrity after the removal of stress
What does it mean if the loop of hysteresis is large in thixotropy?
The product has experienced greater deformity
