RFID Flashcards
What is RFID
Radio Frequency Identification
- a method of transferring info wirelessly between a tag and a reader.
Examples of RFID usage
Contactless credit and debit cards
Hotel room cards
What does an RFID card consist of
A chip, containing small amount of memory, attached to a coil of wire that acts as an antenna.
Passive Tags
Most RFID tags are passive meaning they induce enough power wirelessly from the reader to operate the chip
Range of a few cm from their reader
Active Tags
Contain a small power supply (battery)
Can be used further away from readers than passive tags
How do RFID tags work?
When a tag is scanned, the reader emits radio waves which are picked up by the tags antenna
The power induced in the tag’s antenna is enough to power the chip
The chip uses the antenna to emit its own radio waves which contains info held on chip. Wave is picked up by the reader which decodes info and returns it to a computer
