A

-Chose to pick a fight with the Japanese (and lost).
-Authorised use of violent force on the protestors of the
1905 revolution: 200 died, 800 injured.
-October Manifesto – Duma creation.

-Suffered periodic famines.
-Increasing peasant population was putting pressure on land.

What were the political impacts of the 1917 February Revolution?

A

Rejects Progressive Bloc and Duma.
-Nicholas’ abdication led to the formation of the
Provisional Government which was the closest Russia
got to a democratic government.

What was the Provisional Government’s view on war?

A

-The Petrograd Soviet called for peace, however the
Provisional Government (the foreign minister Miliukov)
had promised the allies that the government would
continue the war to “decisive victory” which led to a storm of protests in
Petrograd.
-The Kerensky Offensive caused the death of around
400,000 men. Some regiments mutinied and deserted-
Russia took one more step towards chaos.

What happened on the July days?

A

-July days- Kadet Ministers resigned from the
government. Protests against the war and the
government were becoming more serious- mass
demonstrations were supported by sailors from
Kronstadt in Petrograd.

What were the social impacts of the February 1917 revolution?

A

15 million men joined the army, this meant there were too few workers in factories and farms, which led to food and material shortages.
Railway system was poor, this meant troops and towns could not be adequately supplied and food prices rose.
Food shortages and spiralling prices led to widespread discontent.
The war led to a rapid movement of much of the agricultural workforce to the cities, leading to overcrowding and awful conditions.
