Revision Test Nov Yr 8 Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
Plants make food through the process of photosynthesis
Where does photosynthesis take place
Mainly takes place in the chloroplasts in the leaf cell
Photosynthesis word equation
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
What else is needed - photosynthesis
Light and chlorophyll
What minerals do plants need & how could u tell if they are deficient in these?
Nitrates, phosphates, potassium, magnesium
Aerobic respiration- what is it ?
A chemical reaction that is used with oxygen to create energy from carbohydrates (sugar)
How can u tell they are deficient? Minerals
Nitrates - plant will have poor growth and older leaves are yellowed
Magnesium- plants leaves will turn yellow
Phosphorus- plant will have poor root growth and younger leaves look purple
Potassium- has yellow leaves with dead patches
We’re does aerobic respiration take place ?
That takes place inside a cell in the mitochondria
Word equations- aerobic respiration
Glucose + Oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Anaerobic respiration- what is it ??
Plants and microorganisms can also respire without oxygen
Word equation - anaerobic respiration
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide (+energy)
In animal cells - anaerobic respiration
Glucose -> lactic acid _ creates cramp
In yeast - Anaerobic respiration
Yeast form ethanol and carbon dioxide during anaerobic respiration- this is known as fermentation and is used in the manufacture of bread and alcoholic drinks - ethanol ends in “ol” so we know it’s an alcohol - useful bc it makes bread and alcohol
Exercise - what happens to our ❤️rate and breathing rate when we exercise
It increases a lot - because you need energy to make ur muscles work and to get energy you need respiration and for that to happen you need oxygen and glucose so you heart pumps faster to get more blood around the body which delivers oxygen and glucose.
What is oxygen dept? Exercise
After you have done exercise you become out of breath cus u need to take in oxygen to break down all the Latic acid
Ecology definitions: interdependence
If two organisms both depend on each other for something this is called interdependence
Food chain?
A food chain is a diagram that shows what an organism eats
Food web?
Most animals eat more than one organism so scientists show this in food webs
Producer?
Plants are producers they make their own food through the process of photosynthesis
Consumer?
Are organisms that eat other animals or plants to obtain food
Herbivore?
Animals that only eat plants and vegetation
Carnivore?
Animals that only eat meat
Predator?
They eat other animals
Prey?
They get eaten by other animals
Bioaccumulation?
Toxic chemicals can build up in organisms through a food chain this is bioaccumulation
Ecosystem?
This is the name given to the plants and animals that are found in a particular location and the area in which they live these animals and plants depend on each other to survive
Habitat?
The area they live in
Community?
The organisms in an ecosystem
Population?
The number of organisms of one species
Niche
This is a particular place or role that an organism has within an ecosystem
Periodic table - what do we call group 0
Noble gases
What is listed and how are these classified
They are listed by elements and classified as metals and non metals
Columns are called?
Groups
Rows are called?
Periods
What are the properties of metals
Metals
————-
Sonorous
Good conductor of electricity
High density
Shiny
Malleable
Good conductor of heat
Oxides form alkaline solutions
Ductile
Properties of non metal?
Non metals
——————-
Not sonorous
Poor conductor of electricity
Low density
Dull
Brittle
Poor conductor of heat
Oxides form acidic solutions
What do we call group 1?
Alkaline metals
What is group 7 called ?
Halogens
What is the trend in reactivity? - group 1
Gets more reactive as it goes down
How do they react with h20
Very aggressively
Trend in reactivity group 7
Decreases as it goes down
What is the displacement reaction
When 1 thing kicks out antöne mother to do with we’re it is in the list
What properties do the elements have?
Very unreactive
