What is a simile and give an example of it
A phrase that describes something by comparing it to something else (eg. fast as a cheetah, cool as a cucumber)
What is a metaphor and give an example of it
A phrase to describe something by stating something is something else (eg. The boy was a cheetah in 100m races)
What is a caesura
A sort of pause that looks like two lines (like this: || ) or a comma, a tick (etc.) that seperates up words in a sentence
What is enjambment
A way of writing used in poems where the sentence ‘runs over’ the end of the line and on to the next one
what is tone and tonal shift
Tone is the way that the author writes that expresses different feelings to the reader
Tonal shift is the way an author’s tone can change throughout the story with different scenarios
What is iambic pentameter
5 ‘2 syllable’ words in a line in writing that follow a beat style of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one, a bit like a heartbeat (daDUM, daDUM). They also come in pairs
What is personification
Giving a non human object a human characteristic
What is alliteration and give an example
Using words that have a similarly sounding start in a phrase (eg. The big bad bear was bored of beef)
What is a rhyme scheme
Some lines in a piece of writing that follow a similarly sounding ending scheme, for example:
I pick up the ball,
That I found in a mall,
Didn’t know I would fall,
Now I’m in a hospital..?
What is rhythm in text
It is what describes the beat and pace of the text
What is repetition
Using the same word or phrase multiple times to create an expression
What is onomatopoeia and give 2 examples of it
Using a word to replicate or imitate an object’s sound (eg. bark, thud)
What is slang and give 2 examples of it
Words normally used by teens that sound very informal (eg. bro [brother], tbh [to be honest])
What is colloquial language and give an example of it
It is a style of writing used for casual communication and informal speech (eg. That is nuts!)
What can be described as nonsensical language
It can be described as words with no real meaning or ‘gibberish’
