What is wind direction

A

Direction from which it is coming. It is in degrees true in met reports and forecast. Degrees magnetic from ATC, ATIS as runway direction is relative to magnetic north.

Q

Gust

A

A brief increase in the speed of the wind (often with a change of direction) usually lasting less than 20 seconds.
It is followed by a lull or slackening in the wind speed.
Generally winds are least gusty over large surfaces and most gusty over rough land and near high buildings. The averagingperiod for measuring variations from the mean wind should be 3 seconds.

Q

Squall

A

Last minutes compared to gust.
The wind must increase16 kt and must attain a top speed of at least 22 kts, lasting 1 minute.
They are usually associated with active weather e.g. Rain showers, thunderstorms or heavy snow.

Q

Where is the reported wind derived from

A

Measurements with an anemometer at a height of 10 m over 2 minutes for local routine and special reports and ATS units, and over 10 minutes for aerodrome METARs and SPECIs.

Q

Pressure gradient force and coriolis - geostrophic wind

A

The force that tries to move air from high to low PGF.
It acts right angle to the isobars abs is stronger when the pressure gradient is steeper (isobar is closer together).
The first thing the air will do when acted on by the PGF is to start to move from high to low pressure but as it do this, it gets acted on by the curious effect this makes moving air turn right in the northern hemisphere, and left in the southern hemisphere.
