What are the 4 different types of drugs with one example?
Stimulants - nicotine, caffeine, Depressants - alcohol, Hallucinogens- LSD and painkillers - narcotics like morphine.
What does a stimulant do to the body?
Stimulants increase the speed of neurotransmission as well as, speeding up reaction time.
What are the short term effects of alcohol?
Slows your reactions because it is a depressant. Being drunk leads to blurred vision and can also lower inhibitions.
What are infectious diseases caused by?
Pathogens
Define pathogens
Microorganisms (microbes) that cause disease
What are the 6 different ways pathogens can spread?
Water, Food, Air, Contact, body fluids, Animal vectors.
What type of barriers are there to stop pathogens entering the body?
Physical and chemical barriers
What are the 2 physical barriers to stop pathogens entering the body?
Then skin and the respiratory system

Define antibiotic
Antibiotics are substances that kill bacteria or stop their growth
Can antibiotics kill viruses?
Antibiotics cannot kill viruses as it is difficult to develop drugs that kill viruses without also damaging the body’s tissues.
What is a parasite?
A parasite is something that takes without giving anything in return
Give 4 examples of a parasite
Flea, Head lice, Tapeworms and Mistletoe
Define what a flea is and what it does
Fleas are insects that live in fur and bedding of animals, including humans. They feed by sucking the blood of their hosts and can reproduce quickly. Their hosts gain nothing from having fleas.
Define what a head lice is and what it does
Head lice are insects that live on human scalps, sucking blood for food and making the person itch
