revision list Flashcards
function of respiratory system
allows you to breath by bringing oxygen to the lungs and removing carbon dioxide
function circulatory system
it relies on the heart, blood vessels and blood
Why does Heart rate increase during exercise?
the heart beats faster so that more blood gets out to your body
- Besides exercise what other factors can affect heart rate?
age, gender, stress, and diet
Define maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 Max)
Maximal amount of oxygen you can use within the body over one minute.
Define gaseous exchange
oxygen moves from the lungs to the bloodstream. At the same time carbon dioxide passes from the blood to the lungs
What is the role of Haemoglobin?
It contains iron, it picks up oxygen from the air we breathe and deliver it everywhere in the body
Describe the pathway of blood through the heart and to the lungs and body
Blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels back to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium, to the left ventricle and out to the body’s tissues through the aorta.
Describe the pathway of oxygen from the atmosphere to the lung
When you inhale through your nose or mouth, air travels down your pharynx (back of your throat), passes through your larynx (voice box) and into your trachea
systemic circuit -
is the main circuit, it carries oxygenated blood around the body in the arteries, and deoxygenated blood back to the heart along the veins
Pulmonary circuit-
includes the heart and lungs, it carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to be oxygenated. The blood then goes back to the heart to be pumped around the systemic circuit.
Define cardiac output and how it can be calculated
it is the amount of blood pumped out by the heart in one minute
calculated - (cardiac output Q= stroke volume SV x heart rate HR)
Define stroke volume
the amount of blood that is pumped out of the left ventricle each beat measured in ml/beat
Describe what blood pressure is.
the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries.
- Diastole is,
when your heart is at rest during the relaxation phase of the heart’s pumping action it fills the left ventricle with blood
