Revision For Test Flashcards
What is coriolis effect
Winds do not blow in a straight line because the earth is rotating.
What direction will the wind blow in coriolis effect
Clockwise
Air descends
High pressure
Air rises
Low pressure
Weather
The day to day conditions of the atmosphere
Climate
The average weather conditions of an occurring over many years
Hadley cell
a large-scale atmospheric convection cell in which air rises at the equator and sinks at medium latitudes, typically about 30° north or south.
Ferrel cell
model of the mid-latitude segment of Earth’s wind circulation. air flows poleward and eastward near the surface and equatorward and westward at higher altitudes; this movement is the reverse of the airflow in the Hadley cell.
Polar cell
A weak meridional circulation in the high-latitude troposphere characterized by ascending motion in the subpolar latitudes
2 types of jet streams
- Subtropical
2. Polar
Subtropical jet streams
Forms usually at the latitude of between 25 degrees N and 35 degrees S.
What country’s subtropical jets normally found
Westerly direction e.g U.K.
Polar jet streams
Cold air meets tropical air, usually between 40 degrees N - 60 N and 40S-60S
Oceanic currents
Movements of surface water
More solar radiation at the equator
Warm oceans currents (due to a smaller surface area).
