Revision (Bonding, metallic structure) Flashcards
What are the different types of bonding?
Ionic, covalent, metallic.
What is ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding looks like lots of circles inside each other. In the 1st circle, it can only have two ions and then you have to go into the next.
What is covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding is when electrons are shared in substances.
what is metallic bonding?
Metallic bonding is the force of attraction between electrons and the metal ions.
What type of bonding is in diamond?
Covalent bonding
What type of bonding is in sodium chloride?
Ionic bonding
Ammonia is a simple molecule. Which of the following statements is correct?
It has a low melting and boiling point and covalent bonding.
What type of bonding is there in graphene?
covalent
Water is an example of a simple molecule with covalent bonding. Which properties does that mean water has?
Low melting and boiling points.
Graphite has a special structure which means it can conduct electricity. Why does this happen?
Each carbon is bonded to three others allowing 1 electron per atom to move.
Why can a metal conduct electricity?
The structure includes delocalised electrons that can move to carry charge.
Why can an ionic substance conduct electricity when molten but not when it is solid?
Because the ions can move when it is molten
what does the word allotrope mean?
A different structural form of the same substance
Why are metals malleable?
Because their structure allows for layers of atoms to be drawn out into sheets
What is MgO and what bonding type does it have?
Magnesium oxide - ionic
