Revision - Biology Flashcards

1
Q

What is a microscope used for?

A

To make smaller objects, that are too small, look bigger. (magnifies objects).

Eg. The hairs on a flea or pollen on a flower.

Q

Name the structures found in an animal call.

Name 4 structures.

A

An animal cell has:

A Nucleus. This controls what the cell does.

A cytoplasm. This is a sort of jelly that fills the cell. It’s where most chemical reactions happen.

A cell membrane. This is a thin skin around the cell. It holds the cell together and controls the movement of what goes in and out.

Mitochondria. These are where aerobic respiration happens, respiration releases energy for the cell.

Q

Name the structures found in an plant call.

Name 7 structures.

A

Plant cells have:

A Nucleus. This controls what the cell does.

Mitochondria. These are where aerobic respiration happens, respiration releases energy for the cell.

Plus …

A cell wall. This a stiff layer around the cell membrane.

A vacuole. This is filled with cell sap. Cell sap is a liquid containing sugar and salts.

Chloroplasts. These are where photosynthesis happens. Photosynthesis makes food for plants.

Q

What are vitamins needed in your diet for?

Give 2 examples of vitamins.

A

Vitamins keep many important processes happening in your body.

Vitamin A helps you fight against infections and vitamin C helps wounds/cuts to heal.

Examples: vegetables, fruit and cereals.

17
Q

What are minerals needed in your diet for?

Give 2 examples of a minerals.

A

Minerals are needed for lots of things.

Calcium is needed for strong teeth and bones and iron is needed for healthy blood.

Examples: calcium is found in milk and iron is found in meat.

18
Q

What are fibres needed in your diet for?

Give 2 examples of a fibres.

A

Fibres help food move through your digestive system. If you don’t get enough fibre you could get constipated.

Examples. Vegetables, fruit and cereals.

19
Q

What is water needed in your diet for?

Give 2 examples this.

A

All the chemical reactions in your body happen in water.

Examples. Drinks, watery foods like soup.
