Revision Flashcards
Natural fibres
natural fibres are fibers that are produced by plants, animals, and geological processes. They can be used as a component of composite materials.
Synthetic fibres
synthetic fibres are made by humans through chemical synthesis. They are the result of extensive research by scientists to improve upon naturally occurring animal and plant fibres.
Regenerated fibres
manufacturing process used when the raw material is reformed or regenerated. Traditionally that raw material is cellulose, such as wood pulp or cotton waste and linters from cotton fabric manufacture.
How are silk fibres made?
Through animals such as Silk worms
What is the scientific name for the cotton fibre?
Gossypium
What fibre classification is polyester?
Synthetic
Which material fibre is typically the best for breathability?
Cotton
How does the cotton fibre react to fire?
Slow burn
What is the density of flax?
1.42 g/cm3
Which fibre group would you expect to melt under a flame?
Synthetic fibres
The three fibre classification groups are
Synthetic, natural and regenerated
What are some pros of wool?
Strong, durable, flame retardent, drapes well, anti static
What are some disadvantages of silk?
Prone to yellowing, high cost
what are some pro’s of rayon?
low cost, good moisture absorption, anti static
How would rayon be classified?
Regenerated fibre
