Where is calcitonin produced and what is it’s role?
Calcitonin is released by the thyroid gland in response to INCREASED Ca2+. It promotes the bones to take up Ca2+ for osteoblastic activity
What is PTH and what role does it play in calcium homeostasis?
PTH is parathyroid hormone. It is released from the parathyroid gland in response to DECREASED Ca2+ in the blood.
It promotes the kidney to save Ca2+ and produce vitamin D which stimulates the uptake of Ca2+ from the intestines.
It also stimulates bones to release Ca2+.
