Revision Flashcards
Weather
The day to day changes in the atmosphere
Climate
The average weather conditions in the atmosphere over a period of 30 years
Temperature
How hot or cold something is
Precipitation
Water falling from the sky, it could fall as rain, hail, sleet or snow
Wind speed
How fast the wind is blowing
Wind direction
The direction from the wind blows FROM
Air pressure
The weight of air pressing
Air mass
A huge block of air moving over the earth; it can be warm or cold, wet or dry, depending on where it came from
Atmosphere
The layer of gas around the earth; we call it the lower part of it air
Barometer
An instrument for measuring air pressure
Cloud cover
How much of the sky is hidden by cloud; given in eighths (okras)
Meteorologist
A person who studies weather and climate
Wind vane
An instrument for showing the wind direction
Troposphere
The lower layer of the atmosphere where our weather can be found
Degrees Celsius
The unit of measurement for temperature
MM
The unit of measurement used for precipitation
Compass directions
The unit of measurement for wind direction
Knots/MPH
The unit of measurement for wind speed
On a climate graph, what two aspects of the weather are shown?
Temperature and rainfall
On a climate graph, how is temperature shown?
As a line graph (in red)
On a climate graph, how is rainfall shown?
As a bar chart (in blue)
Clouds
Made up of very small water droplets which are suspended in the air
Hydrological cycle
Water cycle
Evaporation
The process where water changes from a liquid to water vapour
Condensation
The process by which cooling water vapour turns into a liquid
Surface run off
The movement of water over the land, possibly as a river
Transpiration
Plants giving off water vapour from their leaves
Groundwater
Water that has sunk into the rocks below
Cirrus clouds
High level clouds made from ice crystals
Cumulus clouds
Medium level clouds which bring fair weather
Cumulonimbus clouds
Rain bearing clouds
Stratus clouds
Low level clouds that cover the sky
