Revision Flashcards
SHEEPT cane toads
Intro- what? where?
S- drug
H- brought into Australia in the 30’s to kill the cane grubs
E- kills native animals, disrupts food change, sea turtles, crows
E- farmers, money to kill them, VET
Define global warming
Global warming is when greenhouse gases trap some of the sun’s energy within the atmosphere causing temperatures to rise
effects of global warming
Effects include:
- rainfall patterns change
- ice melts and less snow falls in polar regions
- sea levels rise
- droughts, flood, cyclones and bush fires become more severe and more frequent
Discuss the impact of change on the Antarctica King Penguins and Saami way of life?
Penguins:
- food source if being pushed south because of warming oceans
- forcing the penguins to leave their chicks starving for longer than normal to swim out south and get the food.
- this could lead to extinction of the penguins
Saami:
- to feed their herds of reindeer the people must feed them expensive and difficult to find hay and straw
- this is because the melted snow from the mountains freezes into ice over the area that the reindeer graze at (result of climate change)
What are the effects of damming?
- disrupts ecosystems (flow of water, builds up sediments)
- floods areas
- river banks erode quicker
- disrupts migration paths for fish
Define damming
When a wall is built in a reservoir and water builds up behind it
Define wellbeing
the ability of people to access the things they need in order to live a happy, healthy and content lives
Three most important variables of wellbeing?
Wealth, education and health
How is wellbeing measured?
Range of quantitative data to measure wellbeing. Most common measures are GDP and literacy rates
What do other countries measure wellbeing with?
Bhutan measures its citizens wellbeing using Gross National Happiness.
Difference between constructive and destructive waves
Destructive:
- erode the coast cause they have a stronger backwash
- short wave length and high and steep
Constructive:
- created in calm weather and less powerful
- long wave length and low in height
Three human activities on the coastal area of Torquay
- recreational activities such as surfing and fishing
- physical exercise along the Esplanade such as running and walking the dog
- RACV club had been built for tourists. 5 stories with recreational facilities
Three inputs and three outputs
Outputs:
- mining removes sand from the beach
- long shore drift transports sand away from the beach
- sand is lost through rips. especially during storms
Inputs:
- management bodies restore the beach
- sand is deposited into bays and estuaries
- long shore drift transports sand onto beach from another part of the coast
What is a estuary?
A partially enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with free connection to the open sea
Does the sand barrier protect the estuary from marine infnluences?
Yes. It protects it from tides, wave and influx of saline water. This is important because the estuary is the breeding grounds and homes of eels and other fish
