Q

What is Satellite

A

2 types one - way and two - way broadband. One way provides fast connection but only in one direction, DOWNLOAD only. To send info back a dial up connection is needed. Two way allows download and to send info back, much slower.

16
Q

An advantage of rapid tooling

A

Allows the manufacture of tools in prototype lead time( quick to make)

17
Q

What is rapid manufacturing and state an advantage

A

The automated manufacture of saleable products directly from 3D CAD data. - Cost effective for low volume and small components.

18
Q

How does EPOS allow you to stay 1 step ahead of competitors?

A

You are able to supply products faster as there is less time between placing an order and deliver of the product.

19
Q

How are most products identified and kept on top of?

A

The use of a barcode.

20
Q

How does a barcode work?

A

A laser beam scans the bar code - reflects back onto a PHOTOELECTRIC CELL. The bars are detected as they reflect back less light.

21
Q

How many digits does a barcode contain?

A

13

22
Q

What do the numbers on the barcode stand for?

A

1st 2 indicate where the product was made, next 5 are the brand owners number, next 5 are given by the manufacturer to indicate what type of product it is and the final digit is the check digit ensuring that the number has been scanned correctly.

23
Q

Briefly outline compositing using blue and green screen.

A

background and foreground are shot seperatly then combined through compositing. 2 films are digitised. the background is made using CGI - called a background plate. The actor is filmed on a blue background, can be passed through a red filter to make it appear black.silhouettes or mattes are made from the footage one is black silouhette on white background and one is while on black. The four layers are now combined to make a composite image. The black silouhette is placed on the background plate creating a hole into which the footage of the actor can be inserted.

24
Q

What is motion capture?

A

Performer wears markers near each joint to identify the motion, Motion capture computer tracks the movement of markers and the speed, angle and position.

25
Q

What is Rotoscoping?

A

Animators trace over live action film movements frame by frame to produce and animation. Used to be done manually now done by computers. Now called INTERPOLATED ROTOSCOPING.

26
Q

State 2 advantages of CGI.

A
  1. Director can choose any angle for a scene, even ones that would be impossible in real life.
  2. Costumes, makeup and and body size can be altered to whatever is needed.
27
Q

State 2 disadvantages of CGI.

A
  1. Expensive and special programmes are needed to process the data.
  2. The technology becomes obsolete, as it progresses quickly.
28
Q

What are GM trees?

A

Have had genes manipulated to express desired characteristics. Gene is inserted from another plant.

29
Q

State 3 benefits of GM trees to the production of paper and board.

A
  1. Aids resistance of trees to disease
  2. Reduces lignin growth within the tree, meaning less chemicals are needed to break it down - cheaper
  3. Produces a faster growth rate - more trees in the same time, faster production too
30
Q

What are biodegradable polymers?

A

They are materials derived from renewable raw materials that will decompose in the natural environment.

31
Q

State 3 applications of biodegradable polymers.

A
  1. Pharmaceutical uses e.g. coating of pills
  2. Packaging e.g. blow moulded bottles
  3. Agricultural uses e.g. slow releasing pesticides
32
Q

State 2 advantages to biodegradable polymers.

A
  1. Fully degradable in suitable conditions

2. Reduction of time in landfill and space that is consumed

33
Q

State 2 disadvantages of biodegradable polymers.

A
  1. More expensive to make than non-degradable plastics and harder to achieve large EOS
  2. Can still contribute to global warming through the release of CO2 as an end product.
34
Q

What were the first uses of Biopol in industry?

A

To make blow moulded shampoo bottles

35
Q

An alternative product that Biopol has been used for?

A

To make ‘Green’ credit cards

36
Q

What is Innocents eco bottle made from?

A

PLA - derived from cornstarch

37
Q

What is the purpose of quick response manufacturing (QRM)?

A

Was developed to make companies more efficient and profitable.
