what is a bridge
joins together two networks that use the same base protocols.
what is a gateway
joins together two networks that use different base protocols, e.g. links a LAN to WAN.
what is a protocol
this tells web servers which protocol to use when accessing a page on the website.
what is a sub-domain
this is the name of your website, it lets users know that they are visiting a website of a particular organisation.
top-level domain
the TLD indicates the type of entity the organisation is registered with on the website (.com/.co.uk etc).
path
a subdirectory to a specific webpage, helps identify which part of a website is being used (e.g. bbc.co.uk/news refers to a BBC news page).
what is a switch
analyses each packet of data and sends it to the computer it was intended for.
what is a router
stores the addresses of computers on the network and transfers data between devices. Normally it connects at least two different networks.
what is a hub
copies all data packs to all devices on the network, but only the device that requires the data will recognise and accept it.
