Revision Flashcards
What is a galaxy?
A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, all held together by gravity.
What is a Universe?
The universe is the whole of space and all the stars, planets, and other forms of matter and energy in it. Einstein’s equations showed the universe to be expanding.
How long is a day?
A day is believed to be 24 hours but is actually 23.9.
What does Earth spin on?
It spins on a diagonal axis of 23.5 degrees
What are the seasons?
Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn.
What are the planets that orbit the sun?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
My very exceptional mother just serves us nachos.
What does Gravity do?
Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects toward each other.
What is the difference between a meteor and a comet?
Comets are small icy dirtballs that orbit the Sun; comets are made of ice and dust while asteroids are made of rock). A meteor is a space rock—or meteoroid—that enters Earth’s atmosphere, as it – burns up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, it creating a streak of light in the sky (often called “shooting stars”).
Why do we have day and night?
Day and night are due to the Earth rotating on its axis, not its orbiting around the sun.
Why do we experience Summer?
The earth’s spin axis is tilted with respect to its orbital plane. This is what causes the seasons. When the earth’s axis points towards the sun, it is summer for that hemisphere. When the earth’s axis points away, winter can be expected.
When we have summer what does the Southern Hemisphere have?
Winter
What else orbits the sun?
The dwarf planets.
What orbits planets?
satellites (a.k.a. moons, variously sized objects orbiting the planets)
Orbit of a comet.
Comets go around the Sun in a highly elliptical orbit. They don’t go around in a direct equal orbit.
What is my address in the universe right now?
Solar system, Milky Way, Universe
