Revision Flashcards
What are abiotic factors?
- are physical/environmental factors (non-living)
What are biotic factors?
factors caused by other living factors
Dichotomous key
A dichotomous key is important scientific tool, used to identify different organisms based, the organism’s observable trait
What are the dichotomous key limitations?
- Key tend to examine physical characteristics rather then behaviour.
- Some keys also use technical terms the only experts would understand.
- It is also possible that there might not be available keys available for the type of organisms you’re trying to identify
How is the Lincoln index used?
- Allows you to estimate the total population size of an animal in your study.
- Involves collecting a sampling from the population, marking them, releasing them back into wild and resampling sometime later
Its called: capture-mark-release- recapture
Population density
Population density is the number of individuals of each species per unit area. It is calculated by dividing the number of organisms sampled by the total area covered by the quadrats.
Species richness
number of species of a community
Satellite images
Satellite images are best used in conjunction with ground satellite studies so that the images can be matched with abiotic and biotic factors
