What is the definition of a primary appliance?
Primary appliances are used as a first response to fires and incidents, a first stike firefighting appliance.
Primary appliances can pump water from an open supply, street mains, or the appliance’s tank and are specifically designed for the combating of fires and incidents.
What are the 4 main purposes of a Pumper?
- Convey crew and equipment to the fire ground.
- Deliver water in volume or at pressure from open water or street.
- Pump water from a tank supply through high-pressure hose lines.
- Deliver pre-mixed foam solution.

What is the definition of a Secondary appliance?
Secondary appliances have a specialist role. These appliances are normally used in a support role to primary appliances as they are unsuitable for use as a first strike firefighting appliance.
In some cases, specialist appliances may be used as part of an initial response for certain fires or incidents to support primary appliances. (Extended primary response)
