Revise morning of Flashcards
Why do we use ecosystems
For food, water storage, and generate energy
Why are we out of balance with nature
Due to our overuse of natural resources as humans
What has happened in the last 50 years to biodiversity
The population of animals has reduced by 60% and biodiversity loss is the biggest loss we face
What is biodiversity
The number of and variety of species within a ecosystem
What are the threats to biodiversity
- Over exploitation ( deforestation, over fishing, direct impact)
- Climate change (Harmful chemicals and pollution, indirect
threat)
Alien Species (Direct threat)
Disease, reduction in habitat, population density, disease (indirect threat)
How can we increase biodiversity
Use sustainable energy
Re-wild ecosystems
Manage oceans
Threat of human activity to ecosystems
Aral sea (over exploitation of natural resources)
Industrialisation in the UK (burning fossil fuels, climate change)
Alaska USA, (oil mining since 1960s,over exploitation)
What is agroforestry (management of ecosystems)
Give example
Agroforestry-
Growing crops and trees together, this reduces deforestation and maintains forested areas around crops
GROW project in PERU
Provides income for local farmers via selling crops an timber sustainably
What are national parks (management of ecosystems)
National parks preserve the rainforest and protect them from deforestation. However, in reality, these areas can be very difficult to protect due to the size of the parks. An effective way to protect rainforests is to involve indigenous people in park management. Indigenous people, such as the Wajãpi, know more about the forest than anyone and have an interest in preserving it as a productive ecosystem that provides them food, shelter, and clean water.
What are the three types of sustainable management
economic sustainability
social sustainability
environmental sustainability.
What is an example of sustainable management
How do stone lines work
Stone lines in bakino faso
stone lines are created using contours
when it rains water is trapped between stones
Improving soil quality
Increasing infiltration an reduces soil erosion
Encouraging plant/crop growth
