Review: Year 10 Concepts Flashcards
What is an atom?
An atom is the basic unit of all matter. The atom consists of protons, neurons and electrons.
What are isotopes?
Atoms that have the same number of protons as another but a different number of neutrons.
How do you name an ionic compound?
The first element is given by its full name while the second has its name shortened and the suffix -ide is added to the end.
How do name a covalent compound?
The first element is given by its full name, and the second is shortened and -ide is added to the end. Prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms (only if no metal is present).
What is an element?
Elements are substances composed of only one type of atom.
What is a compound?
Composed of two or more different types of elements chemically combined in fixed proportions.
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances mixed together in any proportion.
How is matter broken up?
Pure substances: Elements and compounds
Mixtures: Homogenous and Heterogeneous
What is conservation of mass?
Matter cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.
What does conservation of mass mean for chemical equations?
There must be the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the chemical equation. The mass of reactants must be equal to the mass of the products.
Acid + base
= salt + hydrogen
Acid + metal
= salt + water
Acid + metal carbonate
= salt + water + carbon dioxide
Acid + metal hydrogen carbonate
= salt + water + carbon dioxide
