Review Flashcards
A community of various organisms interacting within a particular physical environment.
Ecosystem
Populations of multiple species living in the same area.
Community
A group of organisms of the same species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time.
Population
Individuals of a population that breed or can potentially breed to produce fertile offspring.
Species
The specific environment that an organism lives in based on what the organism needs to survive.
Habitat
The area an organism lives based on its role and its relationships with other species.
Niche
A diagram of the relationships between interacting food chains within an ecosystem, showing how each organism derives energy required for survival.
Food Web
A feeding hierarchy showing trophic levels and energy flow.
Food Chain
Ecological succession that starts in an area where there are essentially no living organisms.
Primary Succession
Ecological succession that occurs in an area where there is some component of the ecosystem, including soil, remaining after a disturbance.
Secondary Succession
The largest population of a species that an ecosystem can support long-term based on the resources available.
Carrying Capacity
A factor, such as amount of food per individual, that changes when the population density changes.
Density Dependent Factor
A factor that is not directly affected by population density, such as the effect of a natural disaster.
Density Independent Factor
Describes the distribution of individuals within the population and may be random, uniform, or clumped
Dispersion
Three patterns of Population Dispersion
- ) Clumped
- ) Uniform
- ) Random
