What is the pathophysiology of the malignant transformation of lung cancer?

A
  1. Metaplasia of bronchial epithelium (pseudostratified columnar –> Stratified squamous)- This is a reversible lesion
  2. If smoking discontinued, lesion disappears and nml epithelium restored
  3. If continues to smoke: metaplasia–> dysplasia–> anaplasia (an invasive squamous cell carcinoma)
