Review Flashcards
The major non-metals in Biology
Carbon(C), Hydrogen(H), Oxygen(O), Nitrogen(N),Phosphorus, Sulfur,Chlorine, Iodine
The major metals in Biology
Sodium(Na),Potassium(K),Magnesium(Mg),Calcium(Ca),Iron(Fe)
How can polar covalent bonds
The electrons are shared unequally. polar covalent bonds have partially negative and positive charges.
Non-polar covalent bonds
When electrons are not shared equally
Polar covalent bonds
When a pair of electrons are shared unequally
Ionic Bonds
When electrons are transferred from one atom to another to stabilize itself. Atoms are held together by an attraction between negatively and positively charged ions. (gives away electrons)
Electronegativity
Is the measure of how much an atom “likes” an electron
Covalent bonds
a chemical bond in which two atoms share elelctrons to fill their octet rules by sharing electrons. (shares electrons)
What allows hydrogen to form bonds?
Polar covalent bonds allows hydrogen bonds to form because of the partial negative and positive charges. H-bonds are indicated by dashed lines while covalent bonds are indicated by solid lines
Hydrophobic molecules
Molecules that repel or fail to mix with water. (Non-polar) ex: water does not mix with oil
Hydrophilic molecules
Molecules that have a tendency to mix, dissolve and be wetted by water. (Polar) ex: sugar dissolves in water
