Abuse
Physical or mental harm caused by someone in a position of trust such as a family member, parent
Canadian charter of right and freedoms
- no one should be abused or threat others unfairly
- Canadians are legally obtained to respect your rights and the rights of others
Physical abuse
Force it violence causing pain injury and sometimes deathb
Sexual abuse
Unwanted sexual activity including sexual harassment
Emotional abuse
Words or actions that inflict mental harm
Financial abuse
Misuse of money
Neglect
Failing to meet basic needs
Bullying
Person or group of people purposely and repeatedly saying or doing hurtful things to someone else
Physical abuse
Hitting spitting breaking is belongings
Verbal abuse
Name calling threats
Social abuse
Spreading rumours
Cyber bullying
Using the internet, social networks, text messages with the purpose of intimidating embarrassing or harassing a person
Signs of abuse
- support workers are responsible for recognizing signs of abuse
- BUT- - are not qualified to judge weather or not a client is being abuses
- report suspicions of abuse to your supervisor
Abusive relationship
- abusive relationships are complex-there is no one cause for the abuse
- a person is likely to be abusive if:
- problems with alcohol
- has a mental disorder
- was abused as a child
The cycle of abuse
Abuse often follows a pattern:
-tension building stage
Abusive phase
Honeymoon phase
Spousal abuse
•occurs between intimate partners in marriage or common law relationships
- one partner has power and control over another
- abuse may be physical, sexual or emotional
- both men and women can be abused
Child abuse
- parent guardian or caregivers mistreats or neglects a child
- occurred at every social level
- has lasting effects on the child’s social adjustment
Physical abuse
Deliberate application of force on any part of a child’s body which may result in injury
Emotional
Not meeting the child’s needs for affection
Child sexual abuse
Rape molestation incest pornography
Situations that increase Rick for child abuse
Family crises; Divorce unemployment isolation; -No family members or other relationships -chairing for child with special needs
What can be done to prevent child abuse?
Parenting education
Child abuse prevention programs
Being supportive
Education
Abuse of an elder person
- older person are at risk for all types of abuse
- abuser are usually family members
- older person does not repot
Factors that increase and older person risk for abuse
Stress;
-taking care of an older person can be extremely stressful
Ageism;
-bias discrimination against older persons
Vulnerability;
-inadequate housing racism homophobia
Abuse of clients by health care workers
- abuse can happen in facilities or in home care settings
- clients are at risk for all types of abuse
- abuse often happens when the health care worker is under stress
Your legal responsibilities in reporting abuse
- abuse is a crime
- listen attentively
- encourage the client to tell you want happened in their own words
Reporting abuse
Stay calm; do not show anger
Resume your client you believe them
Assure your client you will follow up
Abuse of the health care worker
•caregivers are at risk for abuse from:
- family or other health care workers
- clients with metal disorders
- employer
What to do if abuse occurs
Never ignore or accept abuse
Discuss it with your supervisor
put it in writing, keep records
Sexually aggressive clients
- Sexual aggression is common with clients who are cognitively impaired
- not aware of their behaviour
- behaviour may be intensional
Sexual harassment
- sexual comments gestures threats or suggestions
- tell person firmly and politely that this is unacceptable and unwelcome
- be assertive but not rude
Workplace bullying
- acts or verbal comments that could mentally hurt or isolate a person
- can be obviously or subtle
